SUMMERSIDE – The Summerside Recreational Hockey League will hold its third annual street-fest road hockey tournament at Credit Union Place this weekend.
Games, which will take place in the Ice Pad, will start on Friday at 5 p.m., with play continuing throughout the weekend until Sunday at 5 p.m. All past players and fans of the SRHL, the longest-running recreational hockey league in Canada, are welcome to attend. Admission is free for all 87 games.
A total of 35 teams will compete this year, an increase of seven from 2017.
“I’m happy with that number,” noted tournament chairman Aaron Doyle, who is hoping to see continued growth in the coming years. “The Mardi-Gras ice hockey tournament started 11 years ago with 10 teams, and it now gets over 100 teams each year.”
Of the 35 teams in this year’s street-fest tournament, 18 are men’s, 17 are youth and there are four off-Island entries. Teams representing Summerside, Bedeque, Charlottetown, Kensington, Wellington. Moncton, Halifax, Fredericton, Saint John and Sherwood will compete in seven divisions.
Each team is guaranteed four games. After round-robin play, teams will play crossovers and then play for the championship banners and prizes. Tournament MVP awards will be presented to the top players after the championship games in each adult division. Championship banners and prizes will be awarded to all division winners.
Major tournament sponsors are Molson Canadian, Greco Pizza, Frozu and Capt. Sub. Greco Pizza/Capt. Sub has donated pizza for every player in this year’s tournament.
