Regals put up dominant performance to stave off elimination

ALBERTON

After being outscored in the first two games of the best-of-five West Prince Senior Hockey League championship series, the Alberton Regals answered back big time in Game 3 Wednesday night at the Jacques Cartier Arena.

The Regals showed from the opening face-off they had a statement to make, out-skating and out-hitting the O’Leary Maroons enroute to a convincing 9-1 win over the O’Leary Maroons in a penalty-filled contest.

Game 4 in the championship series is tonight, Thursday, at the O’Leary Community Sports Centre. Game time is 8:15 p.m..

Jesse MacIntyre put on a shooting clinic, scoring four times including three goals in a row in a span of 6:12 of the third period, two of them during a four-minute power-play. He also picked up an assist.

Before a paid attendance of 700, the Regals jumped out to a 3-0 lead after one period and were up 4-1 at the second intermission. Also scoring for the Regals were Logan Smallman and Matt LeFurgey with a goal and two assists each, Mitch Hardy (1-1), Garrett Lewis (1-1) and Jeff Duggan. Other assists were credited to Taylor Smith (2), Tyson McNeill (2), Luke Murphy, Fidan Feta and Alex Wallace.

The Maroons’ lone goal was scored by Aaron Sweet from Mike Adams early in the second period.

Spencer Rennie was in goal for the win while Chase Dyment suffered the loss.

After only five first-period penalties – four to the Maroons – the game turned anything but neighbourly in the second period and the mutual dislike carried over into the final period. All told the Maroons were assessed 18 minors, three 10-minute misconducts, a fighting major and two game misconducts. The Regals were assessed 15 minors, five 10-minute misconducts, a fighting major and a game misconduct.
