Reds sting Stingers at nationals

FREDERICTON, N.B. – Morell’s Stephen Anderson scored twice Thursday to lead the UNB Varsity Reds to an 8-1 victory over the Concordia Stingers in the U Sports men’s hockey quarter-final in Fredericton, N.B.

Former Charlottetown Islanders forward Alexandre Goulet, Randy Gazzola, Kris Bennett, Mark Simpson, Matt Boudens and Chris Clapperton also scored while former Summerside D. Alex MacDonald Ford Western Capitals forward Chris Caissy had an assist.

Alex Dubeau made 16 saves for the win in front of 3,374 fans. The Reds, who are coached by Bedeque native Gardiner MacDougall, led 3-0 after the first and second periods.

Former Islanders defenceman Carl Neill played for the Stingers.

The Reds will play the St. FX X-Men Saturday at noon in the semifinal. The X-Men defeated Brock 6-2 on Thursday. The Acadia Axemen plays Alberta Friday at 1 p.m. in quarter-final action while Saskatchewan and McGill play at 7 p.m.

The championship game goes Sunday at 2 p.m.
