ABRAM-VILLAGE – The defending Island Junior Hockey League champions will host their home opener Sunday.

The Arsenault’s Fish Mart Western Red Wings will entertain the Sherwood-Parkdale A&S Scrap Metal Metros at the Evangeline Recreation Centre. The Island Junior Hockey League game will get underway at 7 p.m.

The Red Wings, who are the defending league champions, dropped a 4-3 decision to the Kensington Moase Plumbing and Heating Vipers on the road in the season-opening games for both teams on Sunday. The Metros are 1-0-1 (won-lost-overtime losses) after splitting a home-and-home series with the Eastern Maniacs.

Mixture

This year’s edition of the Red Wings features a strong returning core along with some talented new players. One of the new faces is former Western Regal Silas Handrahan, who was named the most valuable player of last year’s P.E.I. Midget AAA Hockey League playoffs.

Newcomers Alex Morrissey and Brydon Smith are expected to play big minutes and provide added depth along with Dawson McCormack of Richmond. McCormack had 36 points with Summerside in the P.E.I. Midget AAA Hockey League last season.

Gritty forward Tristan Gallant and new defenceman Tyler Mitton round out the new players on the Red Wings’ roster to open the regular season. Mitton will add size and grit to the back end, and will make his Red Wings’ debut on Sunday.
