Phoenix defeats Islanders 4-3

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – The Charlottetown Islanders comeback attempt came up short Thursday night.

The visiting Sherbrooke Phoenix scored 2:17 into the game, held 2-0 and 4-0 period leads and held on for a 4-3 victory at the Eastlink Centre.

Olivier Crete-Belzile scored the winner 12:16 into the second period.

Nicolas Poulin had a goal and two assists while Hugo Roy and Samuel Poulin also scored. Benjamin Tardiff had two assists while Evan MacKinnon, Yaroslav Alexeyev and Marek Zachar each chipped in one.

Cayse Ton, Pierre-Olivier Joseph on the power play and Keith Getson shorthanded responded with the Isles goals. Hunter Drew had two assists while Brett Budgell and Sam King added one each.

Brendan Cregan stopped 33 shots for the win while Matthew Welsh allowed four goals on 25 shots in 32:16 before Dakota Lund-Cornish took over and stopped all 12 shots he faced in front of 2,443.

The Phoenix improved to 21-21-6-3 while the Isles drop to 27-18-3-0. Charlottetown hits the road today for Saint John, N.B., before playing in Moncton on Saturday.
