P.E.I. players earn awards at regional tournament

NEW LONDON – Four P.E.I. players received major awards at the 2015 Atlantic major midget hockey championship on Saturday night.

The awards dinner for the five-team tournament, which included the provincial champions from P.E.I., New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and Labrador along with the host Kensington Monaghan Farms Wild, was held at the New London Community Complex.

Wild forward Kyle Pinksen of Kensington was a co-recipient of the top scorer award. Pinksen, Morgan Barron of Nova Scotia’s Newbridge Academy Gladiators and Moncton Flyer teammates Patrik Landry and Chris Sarault all had seven points in four round-robin games. Pinksen had three goals and four assists.

Sarault was named the tournament’s Telus most valuable player.

All-stars

Wild defenceman Jesse Annear of Montague was named to the first all-star team while teammate Cole Hackett of Tignish received second-team honours.

Annear averaged a point a game – one goal and three assists – while picking up just one minor penalty and logging heavy minutes on the blue-line.

Hackett had five points, including three goals, and eight penalty minutes in the four games.

Most sportsmanlike player

Charlottetown Mark’s Work Wearhouse Islanders forward Hunter McIntyre of Montague was announced as the most sportsmanlike player.

McIntyre, a draft choice of the Summerside Western Capitals of the MHL (Maritime Junior Hockey League), did not receive any penalties in the four round robin games while contributing one goal and an assist.
