Moncton beats UPEI 3-1 in close AUS pre-season men's hockey game

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – The UPEI Panthers lost 3-1 to Moncton Friday in their first game of the Atlantic University Sport (AUS) men’s hockey pre-season in a game where all the scoring was done in the third period.

Robbie Graham scored 1:20 into the third for Moncton, but UPEI defenceman Bobby Zinkan tied it at 5:52.

Maxime St-Cyr scored the winner seven minutes later and Victor Beaulac added an unassisted empty-net goal. Carl Marois and Graham added helpers for Moncton while Beau McCue picked up an assist for UPEI.

Moncton’s rookie goalie Etienne Montpetit made 29 saves for the victory while Matthew Mancina stopped 19 shots in the loss.

Moncton was 0-for-5 on the power play while UPEI was 0-for-2. Charlottetown Islanders graduate Olivier Desjardins played his first AUS pre-season game for Moncton on Friday.

The Panthers continue the pre-season Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Truro, N.S., against the Saint Mary’s Huskies.
