At the end of the second period, the Mid-Isle Matrix and Western Regals combined to receive one double minor for head contact, 10 fighting majors, five game misconducts and eight double game misconducts.
“There will be discipline. We don’t know to what extent,” said Hockey Prince Edward Island executive director Rob Newson.
He said the league is investigating the incident with help from Hockey P.E.I.
“When we get into matters like this where it’s a little more complicated, we definitely provide some assistance to the league.”
Investigators will speak to officials with both teams and the on-ice officials. Representatives from both teams declined comment when contacted by TC Media on Wednesday as the matter is under investigation.
Sometimes a review of this nature could take 24 to 48 hours, but Newson said something would happen before the teams next scheduled meeting Saturday in Alberton.
Newson said he was not aware of any players being injured during Tuesday’s game. The teams finished the game with shortened benches due to the game misconducts.
Newson said a fight of this nature is not a common occurrence in Prince Edward Island hockey.
“It’s certainly not part of the game and not something we want to see,” he said.
