The O’Leary Maroons can advance to the West Prince Senior Hockey League championship series with a win at home Tuesday night.
The Maroons, the defending league champions, put themselves in position to knock off the 2018 regular season champions with a 5-1 win over the Wellington Flyers Sunday night at the Evangeline Rec Centre. The win gives the Maroons a 2-1 advantage in the best-of-five semi-final. They had evened the series at 1-1 with a 6-2 win at home Saturday night.
On Sunday night the Maroons were out in front 2-1 after the first period and were up 4-1 heading into the third.
Nick Reilly scored twice, including once on the power play, and Scott Bernard assisted on three goals to lead the Maroons. Also scoring for the Maroons were Mike MacIsaac (1,1), Dylan Ellis and Tyson Carragher. Chipping in for assists were Matt Stewart (2), Aaron Sweet and Aaron Reilly.
Scott Watson from Lucas Verette was the only Flyers shooter to get a goal past the Maroons Chase Dyment. Justin Arsenault was in goal for Wellington.
The Maroons were assessed four minors while the Flyers were tagged for three minors and a five-minute major and game misconduct for elbowing.
Scheduled start time for Game Four Tuesday night at the O’Leary Community Sports Centre is 8 p.m.
The other semi-final between the Tignish Aces and the Alberton Regals is tied at one game apiece with Game Three back in Alberton Wednesday at 8:15 p.m.
