The Varsity Reds, under the guidance of head coach and Bedeque native Gardiner MacDougall, clinched first place in the Atlantic University Sport men’s hockey regular season for the 10th consecutive year on Friday night. UNB, which trimmed the UPEI Panthers 7-1, improved to 21-2-3 (won-lost-overtime losses.
Before 2,917 fans at the Aitken University Centre, the Varsity Reds held period leads of 2-1 and 3-1, before netting four unanswered goals in the final 20 minutes to put the game out of reach.
Cam Braes, who had two goals and two assists, along with Phillipe Maillet’s three-assist performance, led the Varsity Reds, who outshot the Panthers 44-18.

Cam Critchlow, who played minor hockey in Summerside, and former Summerside D. Alex MacDonald Ford Western Capital Chris Caissy added single assists for UNB, which visits the Moncton Blue Eagles (10-14-1) on Saturday.
Cody Payne scored the lone goal for UPEI (9-14-4). The Panthers’ next game is at Dalhousie (8-15-3) on Friday.
Kinkora native Charlie Cameron is an assistant coach with the Varsity Reds.
