KENSINGTON - Kensington outscored Bedford 11-5 in the opening game of the 42nd annual Kensington, P.E.I.-Bedford, Que., Peewee Friendship Hockey Exchange here at Community Gardens on Saturday night.
James Murphy scored two goals and added two assists to lead the Kensington team, sponsored by the Kensington Club and Kensington Royal Canadian Legion. Sabrina Nunn (2), Brett McDermott (2), Alexandra McDonald (1-2), Andrew Weeks (1-2), Drew Gallant (1-2), Bailey Webster and Braeden Stewart also dented the twine for Kensington, which overcame an early 4-1 deficit. Shannon McFaddon and Matthew Reid added single helpers.
Remi Deland-Poudrette's three goals and one assist keyed Bedford's offence. Casey Gladu and Olivier Larose also scored, with Jeremy Bockus chipping in with a single helper.
The teams were tied 4-4 after the first period, and Kensington was ahead 6-5 after the second.
MacDonald and Deland-Poudrette were selected as the players of the game for their respective teams before an estimated 300 fans.
The teams will meet in the second game of the total-goal series in Bedford later this month. They played a fun billets-vs.-billets game Sunday afternoon.
The Bedford contingent left for home this morning.
