Kensington captures Peewee AA Division of Pownal minor hockey tournament

POWNAL – The Kensington Ice Cats could not have picked a more dramatic way to win the Peewee AA Division of the Pownal Markan Memorial minor hockey tournament on Sunday.

The Kensington Ice Cats pose with the championship banner for the Peewee AA Division of the Pownal Markan Memorial minor hockey tournament. The Ice Cats defeated the host Pownal Red Devils 3-2 in overtime to claim the title on Sunday.

Taryn Caseley scored with 7.6 seconds remaining in overtime to give the Ice Cats a thrilling 3-2 come-from-behind victory over the host Pownal Red Devils in the championship game. Jared Mann set up the game-winning goal.

Cameron Mill and Logan Saulnier found the back of the net in regulation time for the Ice Cats, who trailed 2-0 at one point in the second period. Will Mango and Ben MacLeod scored for the Red Devils.

Pownal led 1-0 after the first period, and the teams were tied 2-2 at the end of two.

Carter Champion was the winning goaltender while Jeremie Godin tended goal for Pownal.

Overall, the Ice Cats completed tournament play at 4-1 (won-lost).

Kensington trimmed the Lewisville Lightning 7-2 in the semifinals after defeating the Summerside Capitals 2-1 and the Prédateurs de Péninsule Acadienne Sud-ouest 4-3 while losing 3-1 to the Riverview Blues in round-robin play.

Following is a look at the other Kensington games:

 

Ice Cats 7 Lightning 2

Duncan Picketts (2-1), Bailey Stavert (1-2), Caseley, David Gallant, Jack Arsenault and Jack Donald provided Kensington’s goals. Mann, Mill, Saulnier, Heidi Lauwerijssen and Krystof Wigmore chipped in with single assists.

Jordan Kenny and Dominic LeBlanc countered for Lewisville.

Kensington held period leads of 2-1 and 3-2 before blowing the game open with four unanswered goals in the final frame.

Winning goaltender was Peyton Lauwerijssen.

 

Ice Cats 2 Capitals 1

Donald scored both goals while Mann assisted on both and Picketts added a single helper.

Dexter Stewart scored unassisted for the Capitals.

The teams were tied 1-1 after one period, and the Ice Cats were in front 2-1 at the end of two.

Goaltenders were Peyton Lauwerijssen (Ice Cats) and Matthew MacInnis (Capitals).

 

Ice Cats 4 Prédateurs 3

Stavert’s second goal of the game with 16 seconds remaining in the third period capped a late rally for the Ice Cats, who scored twice in the final 4:32 to overcome a 3-2 deficit.

Wigmore’s goal tied the game while Caseley netted Kensington’s other marker.

Martin Girouard, Jacob Duguay and Zachary St-Pierre answered for the Prédateurs.

The game was scoreless through one period, and the teams were tied 2-2 after the second.

Champion registered the goaltending win.

 

Blues 3 Ice Cats 1

The Blues scored three unanswered second-period goals to overcome a 1-0 deficit after one period in handing the Ice Cats their only loss.

Arsenault opened the scoring for Kensington, but Eric Hicks (2) and Spencer Hau countered for Riverview.

Patrick Chapman was the winning goaltender while Peyton Lauwerijssen was between the pipes for Kensington.
