SAINT JOHN, N.B. – Rookie Drew Johnston made the most of his homecoming Saturday afternoon, scoring twice as the Charlottetown Islanders defeated his hometown Saint John Sea Dogs by a touchdown in a 7-0 victory.
Sophomore Dakota Lund-Cornish made 27 saves for the shutout while Nikita Alexandrov added three assists as the Islanders improved their pre-season record to 3-1-1-0 while handing the Sea Dogs (4-1-0-0) their first loss of the exhibition schedule.
Daniel Hardie, Brett Budgell, Liam Peyton, Cole Edwards and Lukas Cormier also scored in the victory. Colin Van Den Hurk had two assists while singles went to Sam King, who is from nearby Hampton, N.B., Keith Getson, Alexander Dersch, Zachary Beauregard, Xavier Fortin, Derek Gentile and Cormier.
Tommy DaSilva allowed seven goals on 32 shots for Saint John.
Charlottetown, which went 2-for-7 on the power play and killed all five of Saint John’s chances with the man advantage, held 3-0 and 6-0 period leads.
The Islanders complete the pre-season Sunday at 3 p.m. with a home game at the Evangeline Recreation Centre in Abrams-Village. The regular seasons begins Friday, Sept. 21, at 7:30 p.m. when the Isles host the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles at the Eastlink Centre.
