Islanders lose 5-3 in Cape Breton

SYDNEY, N.S. - Mathias Laferriere scored the winner with 5:38 remaining Friday as the host Cape Breton Screaming Eagles defeated the Charlottetown Islander 5-3.

The teams will play another Quebec Major Junior Hockey League pre-season contest Sunday at 4 p.m. at the APM Centre in Cornwall.

On Friday, Cape Breton led 3-2 after the first and second periods.

Liam Peyton scored six minutes into the third to tie it.

But Laferriere and Egor Sokolov tallied markers 22 seconds apart for the victory. 

Cape Breton outshot Charlottetown 33-23, including 18-6 in the third period.

Ryan Francis, Brooklyn Kalmikov and Ben Allison also scored for Cape Breton. Declan Smith had two assists while former Islanders forward Mitchell Balmas had one helper for his hometown Screaming Eagles.

Sydney, N.S., native Derek Gentile had a goal and an assist for the Isles while rookie Xavier Fortin had the other goal. Rookie Lukas Cormier has the other assist.

Nolan Boyd allowed two goals on 19 shots in relief of Chad Arsenault, who stopped 11 of 14 shots. The duo split the game evenly.

Screaming Eagles veteran Kevin Mandolese stopped 20 of 23 shots for the victory.
