CORNWALL, P.E.I. – Sullivan Sparkes tied it and Derek Gentile cashed the winner Sunday as the Charlottetown Islanders defeated the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles 3-2.

The two goals came 19 seconds apart and in the final 2:24 of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League pre-season game in front of 382 people at the APM Centre in Cornwall.

Daniel Hardie gave the Islanders a 1-0 lead midway through the first period.

Egor Sokolov tied it 1:36 into the second period and Liam Kidney scored the go-ahead goal midway through the third on a power play.

Matthew Welsh made 31 saves for the win while William Grimard stopped 18 of 20 shots in relief of Daniel Thompson made 13 saves of 14 shots in Cape Breton’s crease.

Hunter Drew, Keith Getson, Nikita Alexandrov, Brett Budgell and Hardie had assists for Charlottetown while Ryan Francis, Gabriel Proulx, Ben Allison and Mason Beck had helpers for Cape Breton.

The Islanders improved to 2-1-1-0 while the Screaming Eagles fall to 3-1-0-0.

The Islanders will practice this week before breaking for five days over Labour Day and won’t be back on the ice for a game until travelling to Saint John, N.B., to play the Sea Dogs on Sept. 8.
