MONTAGUE, P.E.I. – The Holland College Hurricanes look to reclaim the Atlantic collegiate women’s hockey crown when the Eastern Canadian Women’s Hockey League championship tournament begins tonight in Montague.
Holland College, which won the title two seasons ago, opens the tournament versus the UNB Red Blazers on tonight at 7:30 p.m. at the Cavendish Farms Wellness Centre.
The ‘Canes (11-5) enter as the No. 1 seed, while UNB (11-5) is the second seed. Holland College won the regular season series 5-3 to earn the top ranking.
The action continues Saturday with UNB taking on the third-seeded Acadia Axewomen (2-14) at 10 a.m., then Holland College faces Acadia at 7 p.m.
On Sunday, the team with the best round-robin record gets a bye to the title game at 3 p.m., while the second- and third-place teams battle in the semifinal at 9:30 a.m.
During the regular season the Hurricanes held the top three spots in the scoring race with Samantha Higgins, Samantha Woodworth and Katelyn Dunn tallying 17, 11 and 10 points, respectively. UNB’s Kara MacDonald and Acadia’s Hilary Dort round out the top five with nine points each.
The Hurricanes also led the league in goals-against average (GAA) thanks to Mackenzie Koughan’s 1.60 GAA in 10 games. UNB’s Kate Northrup was second (1.63 GAA) and Megan Titcomb of Acadia was third (1.75).
League all-stars will be announced before the opening game.
