LAS VEGAS – A former Summerside D. Alex MacDonald Ford Western Capital scored his first career National Hockey League goal on Thursday night.

Ross Johnston, who played 23 games in the MHL (Maritime Junior Hockey League) during the 2011-12 season before joining the Moncton Wildcats of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, lit the lamp for the New York Islanders in a 2-1 win over the Vegas Golden Knights, who are coached by former Capitals head coach and Summerside native Gerard (Turk) Gallant.
Johnston’s second-period goal opened the game’s scoring.
Johnston, who was recalled by the Islanders from the Bridgeport Sound Tigers of the American Hockey League on Jan. 19, played 44 games with the QMJHL’s Charlottetown Islanders during the 2014-15 season.
In 37 games with the Sound Tigers this year, Johnston has three goals, eight assists, 11 points and 113 penalty minutes.
