The “Voice of the Rangers” began his broadcasting career in 1956, covering the Summerside Aces’ senior team for CJRW with the late Bob Schurman, who was also the owner-manager of the station at the time. After spending the first 21 years of his life in Summerside, Cameron took a radio job with CKTB in St. Catharines, Ont.
Play-by-play voice
Cameron, 79, came to Kitchener in 1958 and began covering the Rangers upon the team’s arrival in 1963. He has been the play-by-play voice of the Ontario Hockey League franchise for 50 years, and spent two other seasons – 1974-75 and 1975-76 – covering the team when a competing radio station owned the broadcast rights.
Overall, Cameron, a recipient of the Radio-Television News Directors Association (RTNDA) Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013, has been a part of over 4,000 broadcasts.
Future
In a Journal Pioneer story in February 2013, Cameron said he is taking his future “day by day, month by month, year to year” while adding he has not lost any enthusiasm over the years.
Over the course of his career, Cameron has also covered the Brier (Canadian men’s curling championship), Skate Canada and the Canada Summer Games.
Cameron, who coached competitive women’s softball, has been very active working with Kitchener charities over the years. He has been the face of Don Cameron Potato Night, which has been a successful promotion at Rangers’ games for nearly 20 years.
