Students from Grades 1 to 9 from Summerside area schools were invited to participate by submitting an essay of 200 words or less on why the Capitals are their favourite hockey team.
The contest was organized and judged by the team’s booster club known as the Caps Crew, a non-profit organization created to promote and support the activities of the Western Capitals’ junior A hockey team, Caps’ charities and local youth throughout the community.
“Selecting a winning essay was a true challenge for the Caps Crew as many of the essays touched our hearts with feelings of pride, gratitude and team spirit,” said Caps Crew president Marcel Pineau.
Grade 7 student
Green is a Grade 7 student at Amherst Cove Consolidated School in Borden-Carleton. She is the daughter of Steven and Marcia Green.
Following is a portion of Green’s winning essay: “They (Caps) play as a team and that’s great to watch! Their games are exciting to watch because of how hard they work. It’s exciting and full of adrenaline.
“My favourite player is Jordan Buchanan. He is the captain and he works his hardest every game. All of the players on the Caps are an inspiration to any kids that play sports, or just any kids.
“They show you that hard work pays off and if you don’t give up you can be on the Caps or on any team you want. It doesn’t have to be a sports team either, it can be anything you’re wanting to do.”
Prize package
As part of the prize package, Green and two friends will watch Game 2 of the Caps’ playoff series against the Miramichi Timberwolves at Eastlink Arena on Monday from a sky box, and all students and teachers from Amherst Cove Consolidated School will receive free tickets to the same game.
Green also receives a Caps’ T-shirt, autographed hockey stick and got to meet and have her photo taken with Buchanan.
The Timberwolves won a close series opener in Miramichi, N.B., 4-3 on Saturday night. The Capitals play in the MHL (Maritime Junior Hockey League).
