Atom AAA Caps win Oromocto hockey tournament

OROMOCTO, N.B. – It was a successful return to the annual Pioneer invitational hockey tournament for the Summerside Capitals’ atom AAA team.

After finishing second in last year’s event, the Capitals returned home with the 2017 championship banner.
The Capitals, who went undefeated at 5-0 (won-lost), recorded a 5-1 victory over the Fredericton Wildcats in the championship game on Sunday.
“I am so proud of our team this weekend,” said Capitals head coach Tyler McNeill. “They played smart hockey all weekend, and stayed focus each game.
“We have a great group of kids this year, and it really showed this weekend.”

Final
At the Kings Arrow Arena, the Caps spotted the Wildcats a 1-0 lead after one period.
Summerside forward Ethan Dickson’s short-handed goal tied the game in the second period. Brian Zhang (2), Carson Griffin and Grayson Arsenault netted third-period goals as the Caps pulled away.
Alex Gaudet (2), Andrew Thompson, Will Murphy and Brewer Waugh contributed assists.
Winning goaltender Cole Echlin stopped 26 of 27 shots directed his way.

After going 3-0 in round-robin play, the Caps defeated Dieppe 5-1 in a semifinal game.
Griffin (2-1), Dickson (2) and Waugh provided Summerside’s goals, with assists going to Lincoln Waugh, Pridham and Arsenault.
Winning goaltender was George Gallant.
