CHARLOTTETOWN – The Charlottetown Islanders and Saint John Sea Dogs swung a major trade on Friday.

The Islanders acquired 17-year-old defenceman Will Thompson in exchange for a first-round pick in the 2015 Quebec Major Junior Hockey League Entry Draft.

Thompson was Saint John’s first-round pick in 2013, and had three goals and seven assists in 41 games with the Sea Dogs in his rookie season.

“We are very excited to be able to add another young quality defenceman to our defensive core,” said Islanders general manager and Summerside native Grant Sonier. “To have success in this league it is imperative to have a strong defensive unit.

“We feel Thompson is ready to take his game to the next level, and by doing so he will add depth to our team defence.”

Thompson, who was taken 17th overall, will join David Henley (8), Daniel Sprong (13) and Alexandre Goulet (19) as 2013 first-round picks in the Islanders’ line-up this season.
