POWNAL – The Southside Lynx made it two P.E.I. Midget AA Boys Hockey League championships in a row on Sunday.

The Lynx defeated the North River Flames 4-1 in the winner-take-all final game at the Pownal Sports Centre.

This year’s title run was not without some challenges for Southside, which was hit with some late-season injuries and played the championship tournament with only 11 healthy skaters.

Lynx team officials praised the players for “showing a lot of heart and determination along the way,” and noted “the victory was a complete team effort, with players contributing in any way possible.”

After playing .500 hockey for the first half of the schedule, the Lynx finished very strong to post an 18-13-1 (won-lost-tied) regular-season mark.

Tough start

However, the Lynx got off to a tough start in the provincials, losing their opening game 5-4 to Sherwood on Friday afternoon. Southside bounced back on Saturday to defeat the Gulf Storm 4-2 and Charlottetown 5-1 to finish first in their division.

This set up a semifinal berth against Montague on Sunday morning, and the Lynx came ready to play. Southside, which was led by CJ McCardle’s four-goal performance, jumped out to an early 3-0 lead en route to a 6-2 victory.

Championship game

In the championship game, the Lynx and Flames played a scoreless first period, but two goals by Ryan Beckingham put Southside ahead 2-1 after two periods.

Beckingham completed the hat trick early in the third, and a highlight-reel save by Lynx goalie Tyler Bell midway through the period preserved the two-goal advantage.

“Tyler Bell was phenomenal in goal when called upon,” noted the team officials.

A late empty-net goal sealed the Southside victory and earned the Lynx another championship banner.
