Peewee Caps book ticket to Atlantic ch’ship for fourth straight year

The Summerside Capitals edged the Western Warriors 2-1 to win the P.E.I. peewee AAA hockey championship in Tignish on Sunday.

TIGNISH – The Summerside Capitals are heading to the Bell Aliant Atlantic peewee AAA hockey championship for a fourth consecutive year.

The Capitals claimed the provincial title with an exciting 2-1 victory over the host Western Warriors on Sunday afternoon.

The provincial championship tournament, featuring the top six teams from across the province, drew huge crowds at the Tignish Credit Union Arena, and the fans enjoyed some terrific hockey all weekend.

The Capitals received a complete team effort, winning all five tournament matches and outscoring their opponents 24-4.

The Capitals will now move onto the Atlantic championship in Fredericton, N.B., from March 27 to 30.

Mason Mantzavrakos scored the championship-clinching goal for the Capitals, one-timing a Bradley Campbell drop pass to break a third-period tie in a 2-1 victory over the host Western Warriors.

Christian Gallant, who was set up by Campbell, also scored for the Capitals.

The Warriors goal was scored by Kalim DesRoches, assisted by Chase Gaudette.

Both goaltenders, Chad Arsenault (Caps) and Cole Gallant (Warriors), played outstanding games.


Other games

In the semifinals, the Capitals blanked the Mid-Isle Matrix 3-0.

Mantzavrakos (2-1) and Nick Reeves scored for the Capitals while Dylan McCormack added three assists. Stephen Smallwood and Ed McNeill added single helpers.

Arsenault recorded the shutout.

In round-robin play, the Capitals defeated the Sherwood Falcons 12-1, Charlottetown Abbies 4-1 and Mid-Isle Matrix 3-1.

Bennett MacArthur’s five goals and one assist led the way for the Capitals. Reeves (2-1), Ethan Beaulieu (2-1), Blake VanderVelden (1-1), Christian Gallant and Mantzavrakos also dented the twine. McNeill (2), Colby MacArthur (2), Kennedy Gallant (2), Charlie DesRoches and Smallwood chipped in with assists.

Winning goaltender was Maggie Johnston.

Bennett MacArthur (2-1), Colby MacArthur (1-2) and Mantzavrakos accounted for Summerside’s scoring. Smallwood, Reeves and Beaulieu earned assists.

Arsenault picked up the goaltending win.

Campbell, who had one goal and two assists, was in on all three Summerside goals. Kennedy Gallant (1-1) and Christian Gallant rounded out the scoring. Caleb Dawson earned an assist.

Johnston earned the goaltending win.
