FREDERICTON – Alex Gallant of Summerside will compete in the U Sports national curling championships.

Gallant played lead on the Jack Smeltzer skipped UNB rink that finished runner-up in the Atlantic University Sport men’s curling championship at the Fredericton Capital Winter Club on Sunday.
The UNB rink, which also included third stone Trevor Crouse and second stone Evan McKnight, lost 8-1 to the Robert Mayhew-skipped Dalhousie entry in the championship game.
The two finalists both qualified for the nationals in Leduc, Alta., from March 24 to 28.
Overall, UNB completed the three-day event 5-2 overall.

Women
In women’s play, the UPEI entry of skip Veronica Smith, third stone Sabrina Smith, second stone Chloe McCloskey and lead Meghan Ching dropped a 3-2 decision to Mount Allison in the semifinals.
UPEI, which tied for first place at the end of round-robin play, also finished with a 5-2 overall record.
Mount Allison defeated Memorial 6-2 in the women’s final.
