Spartans hold off Timberwolves’ rally

CORNWALL – It was a tale of two halves at the Terry Fox Sports Complex on Friday night.

Ethan Haakman scored a 60-yard touchdown to help the Summerside Waterwise Spartans to a 26-21 win over the host Cornwall Timberwolves in a Papa John’s P.E.I. Bantam Tackle Football League game on Friday night.

The Summerside Waterwise Spartans defeated the hometown Cornwall Timberwolves 26-20 in a Papa John’s P.E.I. Bantam Tackle Football League game.

The Spartans led 26-0 after the first half, but the Timberwolves stormed back with 20 unanswered points in the second half to close to within six points with under three minutes remaining.

 

Exciting finish

It was an exciting finish to a great game as the Spartans made a key first down on a third-down play that sealed the win.

The win improved the Spartans’ record to 4-0 (won-lost) atop the league standings. Cornwall dropped to 2-2.

 

Scoring

The Spartans built the early lead on touchdowns by Luke Payne, Blake MacKinnon and Ethan Haakman. Payne scored on a three-yard run, MacKinnon had a five-yard catch and Haakman hit the end zone on a 60-yard catch-and-run play. The Spartans also counted a safety.

 

Souris visits Friday

The Spartans are back in action on Friday, when the Souris Wildcats visit Eric Johnston Field for a 6 p.m. start.
