The Summerside Cox and Palmer Spartans recently won the inaugural Football P.E.I. under-12 flag championship at UPEI. Team members are, front row, from left: Connor Keough, Connor Gallant, Max Chisholm, Finn Turner and Armand Singh. Back row: Charlie Turner, John Turner, Sahib Singh and Alex Campbell.

The Spartans capped a dominating and undefeated season by beating the Stratford Team Two Broncos 49-12 in the championship game at UPEI recently. The Spartans finished the season 15-0 (won-lost) while scoring over 700 points on offence and giving up only 60.

"We had a very talented bunch of skilled players from our atom tackle program play in this spring league, which definitely showed on the field,” said Spartans coach John Turner. “It's great that we now have young kids playing in both the under-10 and under-12 spring flag leagues, as some of these kids will move on to play tackle in the very near future. This will be a feeder system for all the tackle teams in both the bantam and varsity leagues.

“Football P.E.I. has made great strides in growing the sport of football here on P.E.I. in the last five years

Offensively, the Spartans were led all season by first-year quarterback Connor Keough and receivers Charlie Turner, Sahib Singh, Connor Gallant and Alex Campbell.

"This spring football will really help all these players as they continue with tackle football in the fall, especially Connor Keough,” said Turner.

Keough will be the starting quarterback for the Spartans this fall in the Moncton league.

“With the 2,000 passes he has thrown in practices and games, he will be ready to step in at the position this fall without any hesitation,” said Turner. “He will be successful as he knows the playbook already."

Max Chisholm, Finn Turner and pass rusher Armand Singh anchored the Spartans’s defence.

"A lot of the skills on defence can be transferred to the tackle game, such as breaking down before making a tackle, playing zone and man-to-man defence, being aggressive to the ball and finding the ball in the air, which they will all use this fall on their respective teams.

“It should be a very exciting fall season for both our atom and bantam Spartans’s football programs!"

Any players between the ages of 6 and 11 who would like to play flag football one night a week this summer can email [email protected].
