P.E.I. football leagues begin regular seasons

CHARLOTTETOWN – The Papa John’s P.E.I. Tackle Football League kicks off its 2015 season this weekend.

Footbal P.E.I.

The defending Potato Bowl champions, Charlottetown Privateers, will host the Cornwall Timberwolves in the P.E.I. Varsity Tackle Football League at 3 p.m. Meanwhile, in bantam action, the Privateers will host the Timberwolves at 1 p.m. Both games will be played at the Longworth Avenue Field.

Then on Sunday, the Summerside Spartans begin defence of their Hilton Bowl bantam championship in Amherst, N.S., against the Cumberland County Wolfpack at 1 p.m. This game will be followed by a varsity contest between Cumberland County and the Summerside Clippers at 3 p.m.

Both leagues

Both the bantam and varsity leagues feature five teams that will play a six-game schedule. The season will conclude with Championship Weekend at UPEI on Saturday, Nov. 7.

Bantam players are in the 12-to-14 age range, and play eight men aside while varsity age is 15 to 17 years of age, and play 10 men aside.

Football P.E.I. oversees both leagues.
