Green Spartans record a first for Summerside atom football program

SUMMERSIDE – It might have taken four years, but the Summerside Cox and Palmer Spartans finally defeated the powerful Sackville Titans on Sunday.

Kolby MacDonald of the Summerside Cox and Palmer Green Spartans attempts to avoid a tackle attempt by a Sackville Titan at Eric Johnston Field in Summerside on Sunday. The Green Spartans won the exhibition atom tackle football game 46-6.

The final score of the exhibition atom tackle football game was 46-6 in favour of the Green Spartans.

With no league to play in this season, the 24 registered atom players in Summerside have been split into two teams – White Spartans and Green Spartans – and will play exhibition games against each other and mainland teams.

“We have a good team with a nice mix of veterans and rookies,” offered Green Spartans co-coach Paul Quinlan. “They have been working hard in practice, and it showed today (Sunday).

“We have two good atom teams here in Summerside, and football is really growing here, especially at this level. The kids love it.”

 

Chisholm sparks offence

At Eric Johnston Field, quarterback Max Chisholm scored three touchdowns on the ground while fullback Luke Quinlan had two majors and wide receiver Kolby MacDonald had one.

The Green Spartans’ defence was outstanding as Ben Murphy and Logan Rogers each registered a couple of sacks.

The Green Spartans led 22-0 at halftime.

The White Spartans will travel to Sackville, N.B., to take on the Titans in another exhibition game on Saturday.
