ALBERTON
Tyler MacKenzie scored two with hammer in the extra end to score a 7-5 win over the Calvin Smith rink from Crapaud in the opening draw of the P.E.I. Provincial Mixed Curling championship Friday morning at the Western Community Curling Club in Alberton. Smith had scored one with hammer in the eighth end to tie the game and force an extra end against the Charlottetown rink.
Teams from the host club won the other two games in the opening draw. Freddy Fraser was up 4-0 after three ends en route to doubling the Glen Betts rink from the Maple Leaf and Western clubs 6-3 and Daryl MacDonald stole the first two ends and then rode a sixth end hit for three to a 7-5 win over the Corey Miller rink from the Silver Fox.
Nine teams are entered in the modified triple knock-out championship. The defending champions are not entered so there will be a new champion crowned as early as Sunday evening or as late as Monday afternoon. Draws are scheduled for Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 10 a.m. 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. and Monday, if necessary, at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.
