SUMMERSIDE – It could be a long night for officials figuring out tiebreaking scenarios at the 2017 Home Hardware Road to the Roar Pre-Trials event.
If Tracy Fleury defeats Julie Tippin in Friday’s 4 p.m. draw – the final one of the women’s round robin – all seven teams in Pool A will be tied with identical records of 3-3 (won-lost).
The top three teams in each pool advance to the playoffs, which begin on Saturday.
If Tippin wins, she will clinch first and double life in the playoffs, which goes to the first- and second-place teams, and Fleury will be eliminated.
The results of two women’s games at noon created the log jam. Shannon Birchard capitalized on last-rock advantage to score a deuce and edge Nadine Scotland 6-5, and Kelsey Rocque stole single points in the third, fourth and sixth ends and a deuce in five en route to a 7-2 decision over Shannon Kleibrink.
Theresa Breen of Halifax is also right in the mix Pool A at 3-3.
In men’s play, Greg Balsdon struck for four points in the first end against Charley Thomas, whose rink was playing with just three players. Second stone Brandon Klassen is sidelined with an illness, and Nathan Connolly is expected to join Team Thomas in time for Friday’s 8 p.m. draw.
It was the first loss of the round robin for Thomas, who dropped to 4-1. Balsdon improved to 3-2, and is in a three-way tie with Brendan Bottcher and William Lyburn for second place in Pool B.
Bottcher stole a single point in the extra end to defeat Pat Simmons (1-4) by a 6-5 score.
The other men’s game at noon featured Dayna Deruelle outlasting Jean-Michel Ménard 9-6. Deruelle is 2-3 while Ménard completed the round robin 2-4 after starting 2-0.
