The Alex MacFadyen rink from the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club will meet Cornwall’s Mitchell Schut rink, and defending women’s champion Lauren Lenintine will meet the Annika Kelly rink Thursday at 9:30 a.m. in the respective men’s and women’s ‘A” event qualifiers of the P.E.I. Pepsi Junior Curling championships.
The modified triple knock-out championships got underway at the Maple Leaf Curling Club Wednesday afternoon in O’Leary. There are four men’s teams and six women’s teams vying for the opportunity to represent P.E.I. at the 2018 New Holland Canadian Junior Curling Championships Jan. 21-28 in Shawinigan, Que.
The MacFadyen and Schut rinks needed just one win each to punch their ticket to the men’s “A” qualifier while Lenentine and Kelly needed two wins to reach that pivotal stop along the route.
Mitchell Schut got there with a 7-5 win over Devin Schut, also form Cornwall, stealing a deuce in the first end and finishing the game taking two points with hammer in the tenth. MacFadyen stole six points en route to a 12-1 win over Charlottetown’s Chase MacMillan rink.
To make it to the “A” Event qualifier, Lenentine downed a fellow Cornwall rink skipped by Rachel MacLean 8-4 in the afternoon draw and followed that up with a 9-3 win in eight ends over the Lexie Ferguson rink which has team members from the Charlottetown, Crapaud and Cornwall Curling Clubs.
Kelly keeps her appointment with Lenentine on the basis of her 9-4 afternoon victory over Cornwall’s Sydney Howatt rink and her 12-4 evening win over Emily Sanderson, also from Cornwall.
The Ferguson and Sanderson rinks drew the afternoon byes.
Also in the evening draw on Wednesday, Devin Schut edged Chase MacMillan 8-5. Schut took three with hammer in the tenth to even his record at 1-1. MacMillan drops into the “C” event with a 0-2 record.
