PROFIT’S CORNER – It was an all-P.E.I. girls’ final at the 34th annual Wolverine Volleyball Classic.
Following a round-robin format featuring six teams, the Bluefield Bobcats and Westisle Wolverines played for gold at M.E. Callaghan Intermediate School on Saturday afternoon.
Bluefield scraped out a close win of 26-24 in the first set against the defending tournament champions, and then shut down their competition in the second set 25-17.
Darren and Kate Dawson, who coach the Bobcats, say the team really came together.
“It feels great to win, and it was a whole team effort,” said Darren.
Mary Lowther of Bluefield was announced as the tournament’s most valuable player. Jayde Inman, also of the Bobcats, was named to the all-star team.
The Bobcats will compete at a tournament in Antigonish, N.S., this weekend.
Kelly Herget, head coach of Westisle, says the Wolverines have been working hard.
“We have five girls back from last year, and seven new players, and to pull off a silver medal in the Classic was a big boost for our confidence,” continued Herget.
Westisle set their sights on a bronze medal, but surpassed expectations.
“We knew it was going to be a tough road, so we were quite pleased to win silver,” added Herget. “We are into the final two weeks of our season, and so to have a confidence booster at this point in the season is just wonderful.
“Hopefully we end the season really strong.”
Kenzie Arsenault of Three Oaks, Emma Hill of Sackville, and Anna Herget and Justine Cormier of Westisle were also selected as tournament all-stars.
