Baseball Hurricanes playing for national championship

Holland College wins twice on Saturday

The McGill Redmen defeated the Hurricanes 4-1 in the Canadian Collegiate Baseball Association’s (CCBA) gold-medal game at Royals Field. The Hurricanes completed play in the national championship tournament at 3-2 (won-lost).

The Redmen got off to a quick start, striking for two runs in the bottom of the first inning for a 2-0 lead.

Dominique Ryan smashed a solo home run in the top of the third inning off McGill starter Adriano Petrangelo to cut the lead in half, but the Redmen added insurance runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Spencer Horne pitched all six innings for the Hurricanes.

Awards

Hurricanes centre-fielder Taylor Larkin was named to the CCBA national championship tournament all-star team. Larkin had six hits in 15 at-bats for a .400 batting average, drew three walks, scored two runs and drove in three in five games.

Horne, who had a microscopic 1.13 earned-run average in the regular-season, was named the Atlantic Conference’s top pitcher.

Hurricanes shortstop Jay Oram was a co-winner of the Atlantic Conference’s top defensive player.

Saturday

The Hurricanes went into Saturday morning’s final round-robin game at 1-1. Holland College, behind a complete-game pitching effort from Summerside native Brady Arsenault, who allowed just two earned runs and five hits, defeated the Saint Mary’s Huskies 5-3 to advance to the semifinals against the Université de Montreal Carabins.

The Hurricanes rode another strong pitching performance – this time it was Colby Lyle going the distance to earn the win –in the late-afternoon semifinal. Lyle’s line read seven innings, one unearned run, four hits, two walks and three strikeouts.

Dylan McQuaid, who went 1-for-3, had the big blow offensively – a two-run homer for the Hurricanes. Larkin (2-4) and Ryan (1-3) also drove in runs while Jonathan Arsenault (2), Oram and Grant Grady crossed home plate for the Hurricanes.
