Senior Islanders split vs. Alpines

CHARLOTTETOWN – Jordan Stevenson made sure the Charlottetown Gaudet’s Body Islanders got off to a good start on Saturday.

Stevenson earned the pitching victory and had a perfect summary at the plate in the Islanders’ 3-0 win over the Saint John Alpines in Game 1 of a New Brunswick Senior Baseball League doubleheader.
The Alpines, behind Jack Shannon’s five-hitter, rebounded to win the second game by a 3-1 score. The Islanders hosted both contests at Memorial Field.
The Islanders, last in the five-team loop, are now 7-16 (won-lost) while second-place Saint John improved to 13-9.
The Islanders are back in action on Tuesday, when the Moncton Fisher Cats visit Memorial Field for a 7:30 p.m. start. Moncton took a 12-9 mark into Sunday night’s home match versus the Fredericton Royals (10-12).

Stevenson went the distance and his pitching line read two hits, one walk and four strikeouts. He was just as dominant at the plate, going a perfect 3-for-3, scoring a run and driving in another as the Islanders struck for three runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Josh McKinnon and Grant Grady, who were both 1-for-3, drove in the other Charlottetown runs. Jordan Duffy (2-4, run scored) and Spencer Montgomery (1-2, walk) were the Islanders’ other top hitters.
Shawn O’Toole was tagged with the pitching loss. He allowed three earned runs on 10 hits and one walk. He recorded six strikeouts.
Devan Thomas and Ron Barton had Saint John’s hits.

Alpines 3 Islanders 1
Shannon, who struck out seven, went the distance for the Alpines in earning the pitching win in Game 2. He gave up one earned run, five hits and two walks. Jacob Beck took the loss, granting three runs (two earned) on five hits and one walk in five innings of work. Brody MacDonald pitched two scoreless innings of one-hit relief.
Adam Clark (2-3, run scored) ignited Saint John’s offence, which tied the game 1-1 in the fourth inning and took a 3-1 lead in the fifth.
Grady (2-3, RBI), Stevenson (1-2, run scored, walk), Jesse MacIntyre (1-3) and Kyle MacDougall (1-3) had Charlottetown’s hits.
