MONCTON, N.B. – The P.E.I. Youth Selects did their damage in the middle innings Sunday to defeat Newfoundland and Labrador 5-2 to finish ninth at the Canada Cup baseball championship in Moncton.
The Island squad finished the 10-team tournament with a 3-3 record.
Prince Edward Island opened the scoring with two in the bottom of the third. The teams traded single runs in the fourth while P.E.I. added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth. Newfoundland got one back in the seventh.
Garret Herbert and Josh Myers were each 1-for-3 with two RBI while Dylan Cameron was 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Herbert had a double, a walk and scored once. Gabriel Penalver, Nolan Ryan and Noah Duckworth each had a hit and scored once while Nathan Jones went 1-for-1.
Ben MacDougall went 5 2/3 innings for the win. He allowed a run on three hits and a walk while striking out seven. Jack MacKenzie retired the only batter he faced while Penalver allowed a run on a hit and a walk while striking out two in one inning of work.
