Legends’ Field Honour Roll inductees named

Paul H. Schurman, chair of the selection committee, made the announcement in a media release on Wednesday. The ceremony, which will coincide with the Summerside Area Baseball Association’s Opening Day at Queen Elizabeth Park, is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
This year’s inductees are the late J. Charles Hogan, the Curran and Briggs Intermediates, Curran and Briggs Juniors, the Summerside Junior Legionnaires and the 1967 Little League All-Stars of Summerside.
The 2017 Honour Roll members, and/or their family members, have all been invited to the unveiling ceremony.

J. Charles Hogan
Hogan was a standout athlete in baseball, track and field, rugby and hockey prior to his service overseas in the Second World War. As a baseball coach, he led numerous Summerside teams to provincial and Maritime championships from 1949 to 1951.
His Curran and Briggs teams were Maritime intermediate champions in 1949 and 1950, and he coached the Curran and Briggs Juniors to a Maritime title in 1950.

Intermediates and Juniors
It is believed that Summerside is the only Maritime community to have won an intermediate and junior baseball championship in the same season, when the two Curran and Briggs teams won their respective titles.

Junior Legionnaires
The Summerside Junior Legionnaires were a team to be reckoned with from 1961 to 1964. They were Maritime finalists in 1961, dropping an 11-inning game with the Liverpool Larrupers.
In 1963, they again were Maritime finalists, losing to the Halifax Juniors. And then in 1964, they scored a 2-0 win over the Halifax Juniors in a sudden-death game played at Queen Elizabeth Park to capture the tri-province crown.

Little League All-Stars
The fourth team to join the Honour Roll will be the 1967 Little League All-Stars of Summerside.
As Canada’s 100th centennial year was celebrated in many ways, the Canadian National Exhibition hosted a national Little League tournament in Toronto, with invitations to four regions of the country – West, Toronto, Quebec and P.E.I. as Canada’s birthplace.
Summerside’s Little League All-Stars, comprised of service club-sponsored teams – Legion, Rotary, Ys’men, Kinsmen and RCAF – were invited.
The team, chosen by the clubs coaches, took part in an elimination tournament, with all games played on the CNE baseball fields. The All-Stars did the community and province proud by defeating Quebec 5-3, and losing to the Toronto City Parks All-Stars. The All-Stars then dropped a close 2-1 decision to Calgary in a playoff game, and finished third overall.
