The ‘Canes ultimately fell 2-1 to the OCAA-champion St. Clair College Saints in the semifinals. St. Clair lost 2-1 in the final against Fanshawe College.
Semifinal
After a fifth-inning solo home run in Sunday’s semifinal by outfielder Josh McDonald gave the Hurricanes a 1-0 edge, the Saints rebounded with a single run in the sixth.
Both teams threatened, but neither could get the go-ahead run until the bottom of the seventh, when the Saints secured the walk-off win with a bases-loaded single.
Holland College finished 2-3 (won-lost) overall, with victories over John Abbott College (17-0) and Humber (2-0). Colby Lyle pitched the shutout versus Humber, and pushed the Hurricanes into the semifinal round.
Holland College’s other losses included a 4-1 setback to host Durham College, and a 2-1 loss in the round robin to Fanshawe.
Top batter
McDonald led the ‘Canes with a .429 batting average (6-of-15 from the plate) and had five RBIs in the five games. Shortstop Jay Oram drove in five runs and had a .357 average, while Dillon Doucette (.375) and Ryne MacIsaac (.286) each drove in three runs.
Catcher Jesse Holman, Oram and McDonald were named to the national all-tournament team.
