Horne shuts out Alpines as Junior Island sweep Saint John

SAINT JOHN, N.B. – The P.E.I. Junior Islanders swept a doubleheader from the Saint John Alpines Sunday to up their New Brunswick Junior Baseball League-leading record to 5-1.

Spencer Horne threw five shutout innings in Game 1 and the Island bats struck early and often in an 11-0 pounding. The game was called after five innings due to the mercy rule.

Darcy Affleck blasted a two-run homer in the first inning to start the onslaught. Affleck and Ryne MacIsaac each had two hits and two RBI. Riley Gallant also drove in a pair of runs.

Ben Richard took the loss for Alpines while Ryan Nason and Ryan Evans each went 1-for-2 for the host Alpines.

In Game 2, the Islanders broke open a 2-2 game with three runs in the fifth en route to an 8-3 win.

Brett Hicken threw five solid innings, allowing two hits striking out eight. Porter Smith struck out four more during the last two innings.

Gallant and Matt Barlow each had two hits while J.J. Oram scored three times and stole five bases to pace the offence.

Dawson Griffin took the loss and had three hits.

The Islanders are back in action next weekend with a pair of doubleheaders. They host Chatham on Saturday in Charlottetown and Saint John Sunday in Summerside. Game 1 on both days begins at noon.
