SUMMERSIDE – The Cardigan Clippers’ offence got hot at the right time.

The Clippers scored 22 runs in their final two games en route to emerging as champions of a parity-filled Summerside Area Baseball Association peewee AA tournament.
The Clippers defeated the Hammonds Plains A’s from Nova Scotia by a score of 9-2 in the championship game at Queen Elizabeth Park’s Very Important Volunteer Field on Sunday afternoon.

The Clippers, who entered the playoff round as the No. 3 seed, also pounded out 13 runs in a 13-1 semifinal win over the second-place Kentville Wildcats on Sunday morning. The fourth-place A’s outscored the first-place Port City Pirates 16-10 in the other semifinal. Port City went 3-0 in the round robin.

Teams tied
However, the playoff picture was far from clear at the end of round-robin play on Saturday night as six teams – Clippers, A’s, Wildcats, Fredericton Royals, Sherwood-Parkdale Knights and Kennebecasis Valley Red Sox – all finished with identical 2-1 records.
The tiebreaking formula featuring defensive runs allowed, divided by defensive innings play, with the lowest being the best was implemented.
Here are the results of the tiebreaker:

Kentville: 13 runs allowed in 21 defensive innings – 0.619.
Cardigan: 13 runs allowed in 20 defensive innings – 0.650.
Hammonds Plains: 16 runs allowed in 21 defensive innings – 0.762.
Fredericton: 18 runs allowed in 21 defensive innings – 0.857.
Sherwood-Parkdale: 19 runs allowed in 20 defensive innings – 0.950.
Kennebecasis Valley: 28 runs allowed in 19 defensive innings – 1.47.
