The P.E.I. Youth Selects lost 7-4 Friday night to the host Saskatchewan team at the Canada Cup baseball tournament in Saskatoon.
The loss dropped the Selects to 2-2.
Saskatchewan scored three runs in the second inning and added singles in the fourth and sixth. P.E.I. scored three in the bottom of the sixth to cut the deficit to 5-3, but that’s as close as they would get.
Brett Hicken allowed seven runs on 12 hits through 6 1/3 innings while Patrick Gallant gave up a hit in 2/3 of an inning. P.E.I. made five errors behind their pitchers.
Kyle Pinksen went 3-for-4 while Darcy Affleck was 1-for-3 with two RBI.
J.J. Oram, Ethan Laybolt, Ryne MacIsaac and Parker Harvey also had hits.
P.E.I. completes the round-robin Saturday at 2 p.m. ADT against Nova Scotia. The Island needs a win and Saskatchewan victory over New Brunswick to advance.
Tie-breakers and playoffs start later Saturday.
