SUMMERSIDE – The Summerside Prodigy Sports Chevys capped a perfect weekend on Sunday afternoon.
The Chevys outscored the Dartmouth Arrows 9-6 in the championship game of the Summerside Area Baseball Association peewee AAA baseball tournament. The Chevys, finished the three-day event 5-0 (won-lost) to win their second tournament of the season. Summerside won the Bedford Days tournament in Nova Scotia recently.
“They played great,” said Chevys head coach Dale MacDougall in assessing his team’s performance. “They hit the ball well and we played great defence, which led us to the big win today (Sunday).”
In Sunday morning’s semifinals, the Chevys broke open a close game in the bottom of the sixth inning en route to a 14-6 win over the Richmond Red Sox, and the Arrows downed Fredericton, N.B., 13-3.
Before an enthusiastic crowd at Queen Elizabeth Park’s Very Important Volunteer Field, the Chevys scored at least one run in every inning except the fourth while receiving quality pitching from starter Ben MacDougall and reliever Dylan Thomas.
“Our plan was to get Ben, our big guy, in pitching, and he’s probably one of the tougher guys in the Maritimes to hit against,” said MacDougall. “Dylan Thomas has pitched some for us this year, and he came in after Ben and did a great job for us.”
Thomas and Bennett MacArthur both batted 2-for-3 to lead Summerside’s offence. MacArthur drove in three runs with his second home run in as many games, and Thomas powered two ground-rule doubles and plated a pair of runs. Brandon Gaudet and Marcus Gauthier also went 2-for-3 at the plate.
Cameron Brown (1-2, home run, two runs scored) was Dartmouth’s top batter.
Nathan MacKinnon was the pitcher of record for the Arrows.
The final marked the third meeting of the season between the Chevys and Arrows. The Arrows handed the Chevys their only loss of the season in the recent Bedford Days tournament in Nova Scotia, and Summerside pulled out an 8-7 win in extra innings on Friday.
“They (Arrows) are a really well-coached team, and they are going to be a tough team,” said MacDougall.
In the semifinals, the Red Sox jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, and Ethan Beaulieu homered off the score board in left field of the Gordie Arsenault Field to cut the lead in half in Summerside’s first at-bat.
The teams were tied 5-5 after four complete innings, but shutdown relief work from MacArthur, followed by back-to-back home runs from MacArthur and MacDougall, helped put the game out of reach.
Beaulieu (3-3, two RBI), Ben Thompson (2-2, walk, RBI, three runs scored) and Nicolas Gunning (1-1, walk, RBI, two runs scored).
Isaac Compton (2-3, double) was tops at the plate for Richmond.
