HUNTER RIVER – A Summerside United team combined a potent offence and stingy defensive play in a perfect showing over the weekend.
The United struck for 23 goals and allowed just two while compiling a record of 5-0 (won-lost) in earning the Central Queens soccer tournament’s Under-15 Boys First Division championship.
“We had a really strong tournament, and I am very proud of how they all played,” assessed Summerside head coach Ron Aylward. “Our defence was amazing, and we finished the ball well around the net.”
Close final
The United’s closest match of the three-day tournament came in the final – a hard-fought 2-1 victory over the Sherwood-Parkdale Rangers on Sunday afternoon.
Liam Sullivan and Campbell Pomeroy provided the Summerside goals, and Evan Hume earned the win between the pipes.
The United took a 1-0 lead into halftime, but the Rangers tied the game off a head ball from a corner kick. Summerside answered back to regain the lead, which team’s defence protected through to the final whistle.
United keepers Evan Hume and Nico Durant both recorded shutouts during the tournament. Hume registered the clean sheet in a 5-0 win over RC United in the semifinals, and Durant was perfect in a 5-0 win over Kensington and 7-0 versus Bedford, N.S.
