Gold Cup and Saucer trials attract 12 horses

CHARLOTTETOWN -- A dozen horses are vying for a record purse of $75,000 as part of the 55th running of the Gold Cup and Saucer.

The draw for the two trials was held during a news conference Tuesday at Red Shores at the Charlottetown Driving Park (CDP).

The first qualifier goes Saturday night with Astor (PP 1), Shock It To Em (2), Bigtown Hero (3), Island Jet (4), Aracache Hanover (5) and Up The Credit (6).

The second qualifier goes Monday with Take It Back Terry (1), Duke Did It (2), Mach Wheel (3), Mickey Hanover (4), Wazzup Wazzup (5) and Scott Rocks (6).

“Eight of the entries having records of faster than 1:50,” said Lee Drake, Red Shores' marketing and sales manager.

They include Aracache Hanover (1:48.1), Astar (149.4), Bigtown Hero (1:48.3), Mickey Hanover (1:49.1), Scott Rocks (1:48.3), Shock It To Em (1:49), Up The Credit (1:48.3) and Wazzup Wazzup (1:49).

The Gold Cup and Saucer goes Saturday, Aug. 16, to conclude Old Home Week racing at the CDP.

The starters have combined earnings of more than $5 million, led by Aracache Hanover ($1.7 million) and Up The Credit ($1.3 million).
