Over 50 teams compete in beach volleyball tournament

SUMMERSIDE – A total of 52 teams competed in six divisions of the recent Lobster Festival beach volleyball tournament.

The field was comprised of 18 men’s teams, 16 women’s entries and 18 co-ed squads from across the Maritimes.

A total of 100 matches were played in the three-day tournament at Credit Union Place and temporary courts on Water Street by Doolys.



In men’s doubles, the Halifax-based 3 Amigos, comprised of Russ Lawrence and Glenn Lassaline, defeated former West Prince resident Matt Sweet and Halifax native Jordan Brooks in the final.

Tony Desjardins and Richard Basque ousted Summerside’s Andrew Costa and Alec Parise.

In women’s doubles, the Baby Giraffes from Saint John, N.B., won the title by defeating the Guns and Buns team. Jillian Blanchard and Luba Andrushchenko are the Baby Girafs while Danielle Blinn and Kelcie Levesque form the Guns and Buns team.



In men’s quads, Tony Desjardin’s group Mishmash ousted Robert Panahi’s The 4 Musketeers from Halifax in the title match.

The Charlottetown’s Diggas in Paris, led by Ellie Beck, defeated the local favourites, Mel Stavart’s We Dig Four Play, to claim the women’s quad championship.

The foursome of Tony Desjardins and crew were defeated by Kevin Read’s group Diggas with ‘Tude in co-ed quads.

Meanwhile, the Mardi-Gras Veterans from Saint John defeated the local Capt. Sub Storm team to win the co-ed six-person category.

All winners received a cash prize and Molson Canadian merchandise. Tournament sponsors for the event were Greco/Capt. Sub, Frozu, Colours Signs and Printing, Doolys, Causeway Bay Hotels and Molson Canadian.
