O’LEARY -- A Mark Arsenault two-out home run in the bottom of the sixth inning proved to be the difference as the Charlottetown Fawcetts broke a 2-all tie to defeat the Summerside Chrysler Dodge Eagles 3-2 in the championship final of the Eagles’ three team senior men’s softball tournament in O’Leary on the weekend.
The tournament featured three of the four teams in the Maritime Fast Pitch league
The Fawcetts breezed through the tournament with a 3-0 record. Their 2-0 record after Saturday’s round-robin play sent them directly to Sunday’s final.
The host Eagles lost both of their games on Saturday but rebounded to down the East Hants Mastodons 7-2 in Sunday morning’s semi-final. The score was the exact reversal of the Saturday game between the two ball clubs.
The Fawcetts downed the Eagles 6-0 and the Mastodons 6-1 on Saturday.
Jamie Betts, 2-4; Jordan Know, 2-4, Troy Ellsworth, 1-3 and John Ellsworth, 1-4 were the Eagles’ top batters in the semi-final.
In Sunday’s final, John Ellsworth, 2-3 and Troy Ellsworth, Jason Smallman and Curtis Reilly, all 1-3 were top Eagles batters. Mitch Hardy pitched both games for the Eagles on Sunday.
Steve Langley picked up the pitching win in the championship final. Top batters for the Fawcetts in the final were Mark Arsenault, 2-4 (HR) and Chris Arsenault, Chris Craig and Mike Craig, all 1-4.
