O’LEARY -- Living near the O’Leary fire hall, Marjorie MacKay regularly sees firefighters rushing to the hall to respond to fire or medical calls.

“To me, they are a very dedicated group of men and women,” said MacKay who chaired the O’Leary Seniors Sunshine Club’s committee that hosted an appreciation night Tuesday for members of the volunteer fire department.

When MacKay raised the idea of an appreciation night for the fire department a little over a month ago, she didn’t have to do any convincing; everyone was on side. This week many of the club members went on a baking and cooking frenzy to supply the meal for the volunteers.

More than 20 firefighters and their partners attended the function and in a citation read during the meal it was noted that firefighting is a sacrifice for family members, to.

“We see you responding to fires and accidents in your heavy firefighters gear, ready and willing to protect us, but we do not stop to think about the sacrifice you and your family make in order for you to be there. You leave home at all hours of the day or night and have no idea what tragedy might be awaiting you upon arrival. You tattle fires in the hottest days of summer and in sub zero temperatures in winter,” the citation reads in part, also mentioning the training programs the volunteers complete.

“We feel quite safe knowing that you are always available to answer any call, protecting the property and lives of our families.”

Fire chief Blair Perry accepted an appreciation plaque on behalf of the department and invited members of the Sunshine Club to an upcoming open house and tour of the fire hall.

"They take their volunteer work very seriously," MacKay observed.

I was present at the appreciation supper last night...It was delicious. Any kind of food and sweet you could think of was there. It was very kind of the sunshine club to think of the fire department for this evening. It was a great way to spend our supper time. Thanks once again!
