Big third period sends Hawks to 2-0 series lead

Souris can sweep Summerside on Thursday

SOURIS – A big third period helped send the Souris Hawks to a 2-0 series lead over the Summerside Source for Sports Capitals in the Razzy’s P.E.I. Junior Hockey League playoffs.

The Hawks scored six goals, including three in a 1:02 span, to turn a 6-3 deficit after 40 minutes into a 9-6 victory on Sunday night. The Hawks, who won the series opener 4-2 on Friday night, will go for the series sweep at The Plex in Slemon Park on Thursday at 7 p.m. Fans are asked to note that Game 3 has been changed to Thursday.

At the Eastern Kings Sportsplex, JD Farrell (3), Colby Mooney (2), Derek Cormier (1-4), Mike Power (1-2), Patrick Malone (1-2) and TJ Donahue scored for Souris, which led 3-2 after the first period. Jordan MacCormack, Luke MacDonald, Ryan Compton, Darcy Nicholson and Drew MacInnis earned assists.

For the Capitals, Gregory Arsenault (2-2), Matt MacDonald (1-2), Cody Arsenault (1-1), Zack MacDonald and Taylor Albert found the back of the net. Tyler Peters (2), Nathan Arsenault, Cameron Arsenault, Tanner Murchison and Travis Thibideau picked up helpers.

Seth Nicholson, who played the third period, earned the goaltending win in relief of Kelton Ellis. Catlin Sonier was between the pipes for Summerside.
