Ted Cross, community service chairman for the Summerside Rotary club, checks out one of four new computers the Rotary Club help finance for The East Prince Youth Development Centre. The Rotary Club donated $1,500 to help with the purchase
Barb Broome, the centre’s acting director, said the service is open to anyone who wants to use it.
‚ÄúThis is a public access site,‚ÄĚ she said. ‚ÄúThey‚Äôre for the public to come in and use free of charge. We have a sign-in at our reception desk to get to use the computers.‚ÄĚ
Broome said people can use the computers for job searches, resumes, cover letters and for keeping in touch with family and friends through the email.
‚ÄúIt‚Äôs great to have it here for the public to come in and use it,‚ÄĚ she said.
The service is available Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
She said at the former East Prince Youth Development Centre site there were 12 computers available.
‚ÄúBut they were very old and a lot of them didn‚Äôt work well,‚ÄĚ she said. ‚ÄúIt was really great to have the opportunity to get four new ones here.‚ÄĚ
With the centre’s new location at Holland College Summerside Waterfront campus, students have taken advantage of the service.
‚ÄúSometimes, Holland College adult ed. are here in this part of the building and they pop out or the participants that we have may come in to make changes to resumes, write cover letter or do job searches,‚ÄĚ Broome said.
She said printing services are also available.
‚ÄúBut if you are not a client of East Prince Youth Development Centre there is a charge to print,‚ÄĚ she said.
Ted Cross, community service chairman for the Summerside Rotary club, said the club received the request for funding from earlier this year
‚ÄúAs part of our mandate of giving back to the community and donating funds we had a request for funding for some of their computers for youth development programs here,‚ÄĚ Cross said. ‚ÄúWe agreed to provide $1,500 from this year‚Äôs budget for the centre.‚ÄĚ
Broome said it is difficult to get an accurate read on the numbers using the service because the computers were only installed on Dec. 23.
‚ÄúIt was an early Christmas present for us,‚ÄĚ Broome said. ‚ÄúThose who have used them so far are really impressed with the difference between the old computers we use to have and the brand new ones.‚ÄĚ
