Turf field good fit at Simmons

The City of Charlottetown is looking for public input into the design and location of a new multi-purpose turf field.

As the parent of a football player living in the city, who has benefited tremendously from this sport, I would ask that it be designed to be a regulation Canadian field with lights and placed at the Simmons Sport Complex where the Charlottetown Privateers can make best use of it.

The Privateers are working hard to increase the identity of football in the City, but it is tough playing from a small field tucked behind the Maritime Electric yard. Having a full sized football field with lights will help the team immensely, especially if it is located near the schools they draw many of their players from and will provide more opportunities for longer practices and night time games. A new turf field will bring some excitement to the team, and turf will allow the team to start practices earlier in the season and to hold them in all types of weather. A real win for the Privateers and for football in Charlottetown.

Football is an excellent sport for youth, as it requires children of all sizes and skill levels to build a team, there is a spot for every type of athlete in football.  It helps build confidence, self-esteem, teamwork, and leadership and gets kids physically active. In this day and age any group looking to get youth out and participating in sports should be assisted in any way we can, and locating the new field at the Simmons Complex will do just that.

We ask that for a moment to think about how many hockey rinks there are in the Charlottetown area, how many soccer fields, and how many baseball fields? Now think how many regulation size football fields, that¹s an easy answer, there are zero. We are asking for just one regulation size turf field with lights that can benefit more then just the football program, that is self-maintaining.  All other sports seem to get the recognition and support they need we just ask the same consideration for football.  Not all kids are cut out for hockey, baseball and soccer.  Football offers an opportunity for every level of athlete.

This sport has given our child a sense of belonging, self-confidence and leadership he never otherwise would have gotten if not for football.  It would be wonderful to see the program grow so that other children can benefit and have these same opportunities when they just don¹t fit the mold for other sports.

I am asking the Mayor and Council to work with the Privateers to build and locate a full sized new turf field with lights in the best possible location for football, at the Simmons Complex.
