LETTER: Students learning religious bigotry

The saddest result of having Christian prayer recitations at Caronport Elementary School and Lindale Elementary School is that the students are learning religious bigotry. They're learning that it's okay for Christians to discriminate against religious minorities and nonreligious people.

It was foolish for the schools to poll parents on whether there should be prayer recitations. The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and Saskatchewan Human Rights Code protect minorities from a tyranny of the majority. A courageous student at one of the schools needs to file a human rights complaint.

Saskatchewan isn’t a Christian province. It’s a secular multireligious province in a secular multireligious country. The school division needs to respect everybody. They need to protect the rights of the minority from the discriminatory will of the majority.
